The goal of this project is to detail the history of the families that sailed from Northern Ireland to South Carolina under the leadership of Rev. William Martin in 1772.

Right now this project just has one member, me. I am Margaret Espaillat.

Here are some of the tasks that I think need to be done. I'll be working on them, and could use your help.

  • Trace the migration starting ca. 1805 to the various midwestern states from SC. The Convenanter Church directed the congregation to leave South Carolina and relocate to non-slaveholding territories.
  • Identify those who sailed on the five ships: Lord Dunluce, James and Mary, Pennsylvania Farmer, Hopewell, and Freemason
  • Identify family ties with those sharing the same surnames.

Will you join me? Please post a comment here on this page, in G2G using the project tag, or send me a private message. Thanks!

Thomas Grafton b c 1716 Ireland d 1797 Fairfield Co SC immigrated (port unknown) sometime aft 1790 with wife Elizabeth LNU and children: Elizabeth, Thos Jr, Danl, Mary, John, Stewart and Allen. I can only prove that Thomas Jr b 1752 Ireland d 1798 Fairfield CO SC remained in SC. Danl d 1801 in Louisiana. John may have been the original immigrant as he appears on the SC 1790 Census as the only Grafton/Graffin in the state. He dies in Mississippi 1821. Stewart migrated to Mississippi after 1806 as he applied for Naturalization in April of that year at Fairfield SC Court. He and his family migrated to Canada abt 1812 where he died 1837, Allen d 1809 Mississippi after marrying Agnes LNU in SC. Daughters Elizabeth and Mary- I have no further information on them. Thomas Grafton Jr b 1752 Ireland is my 4great-grandfather. His daughter Elizabeth b 1783 Ireland married into another Scots Irish family named McCullough/McCulloch. See separate post for this line.

Arthur Cunningham and wife Jane and 2 children immigrated to SC in Dec 1767 on Earl of Donegal from Larne, Belfast Ireland. They are my maternal 4ggrandparents.

This is a great project idea, Margaret! It would fit well in our United States History Project, especially the South Carolina sub. Some of those surnames are in my own family tree, so I'll have to check and see if I can help out. Thanks for starting it!
